About Us
"Our model of legal support makes us stand out from the rest - we care about our clients’ situations and will help them as much as we can, through our free or affordable services."
Our Services
"One of the greatest challenges to accessing specialist legal advice is that people don’t always recognise that their problem has a legal resolution. Providing people with specialist legal advice quickly so that we can support them to resolve their problem remains a priority for us."

SLIP Project

Our SLIP (Supporting Litigants in Person) project is managed by the Access to Justice Foundation with funding from the Ministry of Justice.

What is the SLIP Project?

The SLIP Project is a partnership between North East Law Centre and all North East Local Citizen Advice Offices. The aims of the project are as follows:

  • To ensure that Litigants in Person know what support is available to them and are better able to access appropriate legal advice in the subject areas of Employment, Family, and Welfare Benefits that will help them to resolve their problem at the earliest stage.; &
  • To deliver services for litigants in person that resolve their legal issues in a joined-up way by working with other service providers across the North East, promoting effective signposting, referral and relevant tailored support.

Who is the SLIP project for?

The service is for a litigant in person with either a Welfare Benefits, Family Law or Employment Law issue. Litigants in person are:

  • People already engaged in a hearing, or legal proceedings
  • People who have a legal issue, and approach us about a potential action
  • Potential or actual defendants in legal proceedings
  • People who may have a legal remedy but are unaware of that option

What support is offered by the SLIP Project?

The project will give clients access to specialist staff and resources that will enable the client to:

  • solve their problems pre court/tribunal
  • progress their case themselves
  • represent themselves in court/tribunal
  • where necessary, access representation in court/tribunal (limited resource)

The SLIP project does not provide a traditional end-to-end casework service; the SLIP Advisers will provide an initial one-off appointment with the client and will then determine what additional support may be required from the project, the LCA or from other services with the emphasis being on empowering the client to take the lead on progressing their case.

Referrals for this project are made by Local Citizens Advice offices to a virtual hub of specialists located across the North East. North East Law Centre specialists working on this project are our Employment Law Adviser, Laura and our Family Law Solicitor, April.
