North East Law Centre is managed by an independent Board of Directors which is elected each year at the Annual General Meeting from members of the public or co-opted as necessary in accordance with our organisation’s Articles of Association.The Board of Directors is required to have regard to the independent status of the Law Centre (as are all members of staff).The Board of Directors has overall managerial responsibility for the Law Centre, its staff group, the services that are provided and all other legal responsibilities of the organisation. In practice, the staff are responsible for day-to-day management, subject to review and approval by the Board of Directors.The Board of Directors usually meets every two months for formal meetings and at other times as necessary.
David Slater - Chair
David had a 35 year career in central and local government service, before retiring in 2013. His roles included regeneration, employment, skills, and large scale project management, Human Resources and Finance.David has taken on a number of roles in the voluntary and not for profit sector as volunteer and trustee. He is married with two grown up daughters and lives in Whitley Bay.
Alexandra Withers - Vice Chair
Alex is an Associate Solicitor with Short Richardson & Forth in Newcastle, and specialises in insolvency and litigation. Alex previously volunteered at NELC, and has therefore come full circle to become a trustee. She particularly enjoys being part of a vital resource to those in the North East obtaining access to justice within a constantly evolving legal environment.
Sam Booth-Malone
Sam is a member of the board and also a member of the HR and Governance Committee at the Law Centre. Sam studied law at Northumbria University before beginning a career in higher education. Sam has worked at two north east universities and is also a governor at a local primary school.
